The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.
